We all have days when we don’t feel like ourselves, when we feel some of the emotions above. It’s important to pay attention to those feelings. That’s part of dealing with your mental health. It’s nothing to be ashamed of and the more you look after it, the healthier your life will be.
Sadly, some people live with those feelings all the time. You may even know someone. Now imagine having to live with the shame, discrimination and lack of treatment and support that goes with it.
It’s time for change. And Partners for Mental Health was created to see that it happens. They are a national, non-profit organization whose mission is to transform the way we think about, act towards and treat mental health in Canada.

On April 2nd, we will be launching our Not Myself Today campaign across Canada. The campaign will run from April 2 - 30.
The final day of the campaign, April 30, will be a day of action called, “Not Myself Today (NMT) Day”. On this final day, there will be an all-out blitz of activity, from special events in workplaces and schools, to media programming where TV and radio shows will feature the issue of mental health and the opportunity to transform the mental health care system in Canada.
- To rally thousands of Canadians to take a pledge of support for mental health.
- To raise awareness and understanding among Canadians about the current issues around mental health and mental illness in Canada.
- To inspire Canadians to take action to transform mental health in Canada.
Campaign Key Messages
We have all had days when we didn’t feel like ourselves. Maybe we’ve felt anxious, stressed or even depressed. Paying attention to those feelings is part of dealing with our own mental health.
Now imagine living with those feelings not just one day but many days (and those feelings amplified many times over) and living with the shame, discrimination and lack of treatment and support that goes with it. That is what many Canadians living with mental health problems and illnesses face every day.
In fact, seven million Canadians will experience a mental health problem or illness this year; that is one in five Canadians.
Mental health problems and illness touches everyone and it is important that we take care of it personally, and at a community and societal level.
Today, there are serious gaps in access to treatment, support, funding, research and understanding of mental health and mental illness in Canada. Stigma and discrimination are commonplace. Many who need help are too afraid to reach out due to the stigma. Others reach out but face considerable challenges finding the help they need when they need it.
You can help change that. With your help, we can transform the way Canadians of all ages think about, and act towards people living with a mental health problem or illness. As individuals, we can take actions that lead to unprecedented improvements in mental health services, mental health funding and the mental well-being of all Canadians.
