Shirley A. Brown Memorial Chair in Women’s Mental Health Research
The Shirley A. Brown Memorial Chair in Women’s Mental Health Research is based at the Women’s College Research Institute at Women’s College Hospital (WCH). This research chair was established in collaboration with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), and the University of Toronto. It was created by a dynamic community-based fundraising campaign honouring a young lawyer who had severe depression. The expected start date of the position is January 1, 2018 or a mutually agreeable date.
Women’s College Hospital, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto (U of T) is Canada’s only fully-ambulatory academic teaching hospital. Three broad themes are at the core of our strategic focus: health for women, health system solutions and complex chronic conditions. In June 2016, WCH celebrated the grand opening of its new state-of-the-art facility.
The University of Toronto, established in 1827, is among the world’s most prestigious universities with a longstanding reputation for innovation and research. Recently the University of Toronto was ranked second globally for number of publications and third globally for citations rankings in the area of health policy and services. WCH is a member of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) U of T.
The chair will lead women's mental health research efforts. The chair helps bring research disciplines together to explore issues that address women's mental health. The mandate of the chair is to support an individual with a strong academic track record with an expectation that the individual carry out a program of internationally recognized research. In addition to being an outstanding scientist, the individual must possess the ability to stimulate and mentor junior colleagues. The chair is also expected to have strong leadership abilities and to carry out ambassadorial functions with the public in education and dissemination of knowledge.
The Chair holder must be eligible for a primary academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
The Chair’s position is for a five year term, with possibility of renewal for a second five year term following a successful structured review process.
Funding for this chair position will be $120,000 per annum. Additional opportunities for income will be available commensurate with qualifications and experience.
